Indices of vegetation dynamics that include both green vegetation (GV) and non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), that is, brown vegetation, were applied to MODIS surface reflectance data from 2000 to 2006 for the southwestern United States. These indices reveal that the cover of NPV, a measure of vegetation brownness and a component of ecosystems worldwide, is highly variable in both space and time in the study region. In the more mesic regions of the study area, the timing of peaks in NPV…

Assessing Drought Vegetation Dynamics in Semiarid Grass- and Shrubland Using MESMA
TLDR
Results indicate that MESMA can be successfully applied for monitoring changes in relative vegetation fractions in semiarid grass and shrubland systems in New Mexico.
Vegetation, land surface brightness, and temperature dynamics after aspen forest die-off
Forest dynamics following drought-induced tree mortality can affect regional climate through biophysical surface properties. These dynamics have not been well quantified, particularly at the regional
Phenocams Bridge the Gap between Field and Satellite Observations in an Arid Grassland Ecosystem
TLDR
The correspondence between field measures of start (SOS; leaves unfolded and canopy greenness >0) and end of season (EOS) and canopygreenness for two widespread species in southwestern U.S. ecosystems is evaluated and phenocams could help meet myriad needs in natural resource management.
Comparing the Dry Season In-Situ Leaf Area Index (LAI) Derived from High-Resolution RapidEye Imagery with MODIS LAI in a Namibian Savanna
TLDR
This work aims to examine the LAI in a heterogeneous savanna ecosystem located in Namibia’s Owamboland during the dry season and derives a high-resolution LAI model related to the corresponding MODIS LAI/FPAR scene (MOD15A2) in order to evaluate its performance at the intended annual minimum during the wet season.

Diverse responses of vegetation phenology to a warming climate
