Abstract Deoxy nor herqueinone and atrovenetin have been shown to be identical. On the basis of spectral evidence these compounds, and related substances, have been characterised as substituted 9-hydroxyperinaphthenones. This conclusion has been confirmed by oxidative degradation to the appropriate naphthalic anhydrides as well as by further oxidation to nitrococussic acid.
