The extracellular hemoglobin from the polychaete Tylorrhynchus heterochaetus is a "giant," multisubunit protein with an apparent molecular weight of 3.37 X 10(6), and consists of two types of subunits: a "monomeric" chain (chain I) and a disulfide-bonded "trimer" of chains IIA, IIB, and IIC.
