Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is used to measure the birefringence properties of bovine intervertebral disc and equine flexor tendon. For equine tendon the birefringence delta n is (6.0 +/- 0.2) x 10(-3) at a wavelength of 1.3 microm. This is somewhat larger than the values reported for bovine tendon.
