Coelomocytes of Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and Strongylocentrotus franciscanus include phagocytic leukocytes, flagellated “vibratile cells”, and two types of spherule-bearing cells; one of which contains echinochrome, a red naphthaquinone pigment. Vibratile cells are PAS positive and contain a strongly acidic mucopolysaccharide.
