Abstract Agents which stimulate the formation of cyclic AMP are well known to cause positive inotropic effects on the heart. This review suggests that the myocardial cell is multicompartmented and has several effector sites for cyclic AMP-mediated events and therefore several possible receptor sites for cyclic AMP-mediated agents.
