Abstract Experimental measurements of pit initiation potential support the idea that the first stages of localized passive film breakdown depend upon the competition for adsorption, at the oxide/liquid interface, between hydroxyl ions and aggressive anions such as the chloride ion. The presence of sulphate ions further reduces the pitting potential but borate ions counter the effect of Cl − and SO 4 2− .
