Abstract A spined loach (Cobitis taenia L.) population inhabiting a small river in northern Italy was studied. At each age, females were larger than males and both sexes showed a marked seasonal pattern of growth with a high rate from May through November. Total population density averaged 2.38 ± 1.6 ind/m2 and the annual production in the study area was 3.3 g/m2. The first year class during the summer accounts for more than half the production. The sex‐ratio did not significantly depart from…

Age and growth of the karyologically identified spined loach Cobitis taenia (Teleostei, Cobitidae) from a diploid population

The overall sex ratio showed that females dominated in the population, but this varied with increasing fish size, and the growth pattern was described using the von bertalanffy model separately for males and females.

Age, reproduction and fecundity of the spined loach Cobitis taenia L. (Pisces, Cobitidae) from Lake Klawój (Poland).

High individual variability in the gonad histology and the GSI values during the reproductive period was observed and could be the result of beginning the reproduction process in the fish at various times and, probably, due to the various numbers of batches laid andVarious numbers of eggs per batch.

Age, growth and reproduction of Cobitis paludica in a seasonal stream

Compared with other populations of this species, the present population, from a low latitude, is characterized by a low number of age groups, fast growth, early maturity and high fecundity in multiple spawnings, typical of species in unstable environments, where adult mortality is high, variable or unpredictable.

Which Factors Affect Sex Ratio of Spined Loach (genus Cobitis) in Lake Müggelsee?

The absolute host-dependence of the parasitic polyploids demands a lower threshold value for male percentage, which should have been reached in spined loaches from Lake Müggelsee, but this was not reached.

Sex ratio and body size in Cobitis elongatoides and Sabanejewia balcanica (Cypriniformes, Cobitidae) from a thermal spring

The dwarfism of the fish as well as the male-biased sex ratio in S. balcanica is considered to be caused by the thermal regime in the spring.

Growth and reproductive biology of loaches Cobitis sp. in Lake Lucień, Poland.

Five age-classes and their corresponding average body lengths of loaches from Lake Lucień were determined by the Bhattacharya method and sex ratio showed the dominance of females in the studied population.

It was found that size dimorphism in this species was due to different growth patterns between the sexes, 2.5 years old males being larger than females and usually sexually mature, unlike the latter.

Sexual size dimorphism, growth, and maturity of the fluvial eight-barbel loach in the Kako River, Japan

It is likely that the fluvial eight-barbel loach has an iteroparous life history, breeding every year, and moderate growth rates after maturity, and the longevity of the loach was estimated to exceed ten years based on individual growth patterns of various sizes during the survey period.

Comparative histology of the testes of the spined loach Cobitis taenia L. and natural allotetraploids of Cobitis (Pisces, Cobitidae)

The results obtained so far reveal that even the infertile sperm of tetraploid males may induce gynogenesis in Cobitis triploid females, and the participation of tetRAploid, infertiles Cobitis males in the process of reproduction in the investigated mixed population remains controversial.

Feeding habits and diet in two populations of spined loach, Cobitis taenia (L.)

The small size and benthic habits of the food items indicated a preference by Cobitis taenia (L.) for feeding in this type ot habitat and on this type of food, in contrast to the stone loach, which is believed to inhabit stony areas and take larger food items.

Fecundity of Two Cyprinid Fishes in the River Thames, Reading, England

Egg production by two cyprinids in the River Thames at Reading, England, was studied quantitatively from January to June 1966, finding the population fecundity for roach was about 600 eggs/m2 and for bleak about 3000  eggs/ m2.

Spawning in this species began in April and expanded well into June with water temperature 20~26。C, and the individuals became sexually mature over the two-year-old and the number of the eggs was counted from ten matured female fishes.

Because the pattern of ovum development in wild-caught females was the same as that observed in laboratory females, it is believed that the laboratory observations demonstrate processes which occur in the natural environment.

Fish production in the Jarama River, Central Spain

Fish production was estimated at three sites on the Jarama River, a small, typical upland river in Central Spain, by the successive removal method of electrofishing, and mortality curves were 7.5% lower than those based on estimated from the number of eggs laid.

Preliminary observations on different reproduction strategies in the bullhead (Cottus gobio L.) in northern and southern England

The size distribution and numbers of oocytes were examined in samples of ovaries from two sites and in fish in tanks whose past spawning activities were known, finding that Cottus gobio would seem to be an annual spawner in an upland stream in northern England.
