Developments in the receptor concept have greatly influenced our current knowledge of the beta-adrenoceptor. The triad of pharmacology, organic chemistry and studies in structure-activity relationships is discussed along historical lines, as it has been and still is an impetus for progress in the biochemistry of ligand-receptor interactions.
