The zebrafish Danio rerio, is an important model organism in developmental genetics, neurophysiology and biomedicine, but little is known about its natural ecology and behaviour. It is a small, shoaling cyprinid, native to the flood‐plains of the Indian subcontinent, where it is found in shallow, slow‐flowing waters. Zebrafish are group spawners and egg scatterers, although females are choosy with respect to sites for oviposition and males defend territories around such sites. Laboratory…
Zebrafish: Development of a Vertebrate Model Organism
TLDR
An orientation to the zebrafish as a model system is provided, from its ecology and life history to its early use in research and adoption as a key genetic model for vertebrate development.
The zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism, with emphasis on applications for finfish aquaculture research
TLDR
The zebrafish is likely to play an increasing role as a model organism in many areas of research for finfish aquaculture, which include, but are not limited to, development, immunology, genomics and reproduction.
Learning to Fish with Genetics: A Primer on the Vertebrate Model Danio rerio
TLDR
This primer describes the swift progress of genetic approaches in zebrafish and highlights recent advances that have led to new insights into vertebrate biology.
Zebrafish in the wild: a review of natural history and new notes from the field.
TLDR
Observations that indicate substantial habitat degradation and loss are presented, and guidelines for documenting and preserving natural zebrafish populations are suggested.
Behavior of Wild Populations
Reproductive behaviour of wild zebrafish (Danio rerio) in large tanks
TLDR
It is found that the fish usually spawned in pairs rather than in groups, and evidence for sexual selection is found, suggesting that high rates of group spawning may be an artefact of small aquaria, which may reduce or eliminate sexual selection.
Zebrafish breeding in the laboratory environment.
TLDR
A wild-type hybrid Sanger AB Tübingen line has been generated from sequenced homozygous founders, and a robust zebrafish line typically carries a large number of polymorphic variations, which may interfere with reproducibility of experiments.

Behaviour and morphology of the zebrafish, danio rerio
TLDR
Observations in the course of this study suggest that male carotenoid coloration, longitudinal melanophore stripes and symmetry of caudal fin pattern may have behavioural roles in this species of zebrafish, which has potential in this area of speciation.
Characterization and development of courtship in zebrafish, Danio rerio.
TLDR
This characterization of courtship display in zebrafish, including its development, opens the door to a forward genetic analysis of vertebrate reproductive behavior.
QTL Analysis of Behavioral and Morphological Differentiation Between Wild and Laboratory Zebrafish (Danio rerio)
TLDR
The results indicate the existence of QTL for boldness on chromosomes 9 and 16 and suggest another genomic region that influences anti-predator behaviour on chromosome 21 and confirm the potential for QTL mapping of behavioural traits in zebrafish.

Inter and intra-population variation in shoaling and boldness in the zebrafish (Danio rerio)
TLDR
To determine the extent of genetic differences in boldness and shoaling within and between zebrafish (Danio rerio) populations, and to examine the genetic basis of shoaling behaviour in general, a study involved laboratory-raised fish derived from four wild-caught populations.

An overview of the multidisciplinary research that has laid some of the foundation of the present understanding of the biochemical, cell biological, and molecular genetic events accompanying zebrafish development is presented.
Oviposition decisions are mediated by spawning site quality in wild and domesticated zebrafish, Danio rerio
TLDR
It was shown that egg survival was greatest in gravel, suggesting an adaptive explanation for zebrafish oviposition decisions, and a field-based mesocosm study in Bangladesh found the same substrate preference, although it failed to detect a significant effect of the presence of vegetation.
