The zebrafish Danio rerio, is an important model organism in developmental genetics, neurophysiology and biomedicine, but little is known about its natural ecology and behaviour. It is a small, shoaling cyprinid, native to the flood‐plains of the Indian subcontinent, where it is found in shallow, slow‐flowing waters. Zebrafish are group spawners and egg scatterers, although females are choosy with respect to sites for oviposition and males defend territories around such sites. Laboratory… Expand
Thermal biology of zebrafish (Danio rerio)
TLDR
The objective of this review was to analyze the published data on the thermal biology of the zebrafish and review of the influence of temperature on several physiological variables, including development, growth, metabolism, reproduction, behavior, circadian biology and toxicology. Expand
Zebrafish: Development of a Vertebrate Model Organism
TLDR
An orientation to the zebrafish as a model system is provided, from its ecology and life history to its early use in research and adoption as a key genetic model for vertebrate development. Expand
The zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism, with emphasis on applications for finfish aquaculture research
TLDR
The zebrafish is likely to play an increasing role as a model organism in many areas of research for finfish aquaculture, which include, but are not limited to, development, immunology, genomics and reproduction. Expand
The Biology and Management of the Zebrafish
TLDR
The zebrafish is currently emerging as an increasingly popular model of vertebrate embryonic development, gene function analysis, and mutagenesis and possesses the attributes of these existing models without their inherent drawbacks. Expand
Learning to Fish with Genetics: A Primer on the Vertebrate Model Danio rerio
TLDR
This primer describes the swift progress of genetic approaches in zebrafish and highlights recent advances that have led to new insights into vertebrate biology. Expand
The biotic and abiotic environment of zebrafish
TLDR
The zebrafish is a premier laboratory model for developmental genetics and is used increasingly for ethology and behavioral neuroscience, and integrating knowledge of biotic and abiotic environments with studies of behavior in the lab and field should provide new insights into the evolutionary origins and selective consequences of zebra fish behavioral phenotypes. Expand
Zebrafish in the wild: a review of natural history and new notes from the field.
TLDR
Observations that indicate substantial habitat degradation and loss are presented, and guidelines for documenting and preserving natural zebrafish populations are suggested. Expand
The husbandry of zebrafish (Danio rerio): A review
TLDR
This review is an attempt to integrate the available scientific information related to zebrafish biology and culture into an overview of the field that can be used to improve the efficiency with which this important model animal is used in research. Expand
Behavior of Wild Populations
TLDR
This chapter begins with an introduction to the environment in which wild zebrafish live and then covers the life history of the species, its social behavior, aggression, reproductive behavior, spawning strategies, foraging behavior and antipredatory behavior. Expand
Reproductive behaviour of wild zebrafish (Danio rerio) in large tanks
TLDR
It is found that the fish usually spawned in pairs rather than in groups, and evidence for sexual selection is found, suggesting that high rates of group spawning may be an artefact of small aquaria, which may reduce or eliminate sexual selection. Expand

Social interaction and distribution of female zebrafish (Danio rerio) in a large aquarium.
TLDR
The aim of this study was to investigate spatial and social distribution of female zebrafish in a large aquarium where they could choose between different localities and partners, and indicates that under more normal conditions femaleZebrafish might live with one or two males but separated from other females. Expand
Behaviour and morphology of the zebrafish, danio rerio
TLDR
Observations in the course of this study suggest that male carotenoid coloration, longitudinal melanophore stripes and symmetry of caudal fin pattern may have behavioural roles in this species of zebrafish, which has potential in this area of speciation. Expand
Characterization and development of courtship in zebrafish, Danio rerio.
TLDR
This characterization of courtship display in zebrafish, including its development, opens the door to a forward genetic analysis of vertebrate reproductive behavior. Expand
QTL Analysis of Behavioral and Morphological Differentiation Between Wild and Laboratory Zebrafish (Danio rerio)
TLDR
The results indicate the existence of QTL for boldness on chromosomes 9 and 16 and suggest another genomic region that influences anti-predator behaviour on chromosome 21 and confirm the potential for QTL mapping of behavioural traits in zebrafish. Expand

Timing and plasticity of shoaling behaviour in the zebrafish, Danio rerio
TLDR
It is demonstrated that larval zebrafish shoal early in their development, but do not exhibit a shoaling preference until they are juveniles, and it is found that the Shoaling preference is stable, as changing the social environment of fish after they had acquired a preference did not change their preference. Expand
Inter and intra-population variation in shoaling and boldness in the zebrafish (Danio rerio)
TLDR
To determine the extent of genetic differences in boldness and shoaling within and between zebrafish (Danio rerio) populations, and to examine the genetic basis of shoaling behaviour in general, a study involved laboratory-raised fish derived from four wild-caught populations. Expand
The husbandry of zebrafish (Danio rerio): A review

Rapid growth and out-crossing promote female development in zebrafish (Danio rerio)
TLDR
In an effort to dissect the genetic and environmental controls underlying the expression of sex in this species, growth of pure-bred and out-crossed zebrafish were manipulated by varying their food supply during development, revealing a male/female difference in the pay-off for hybrid vigor that could be a manifestation of Haldane's rule.
