Abstract A study has been carried out of the Micron ULVA rotary atomizer using a number of oils ranging in viscosity from 0·0073 to 0·0603 kg/ms. It is found that the processes of drop formation and the resulting drop-size distributions depend upon the operating conditions. At low flow rates drops are produced directly from the peripheries of the double-disc assembly giving rise to an effective monodisperse spray.
