Abstract The atomic positions in perovskitic BiFeO 3 were determined using X-ray single crystal diffraction and neutron powder diffraction. The space group is R3c, the rhombohedral unit cell containing 2 formula units of BiFeO 3 . Antiferroelectricity is not permitted in this structure, but ferroelectricity is possible, although the electrical coercive field may be very high.
