Aims. We present the atmospheric structure and the fundamental properties of the red supergiants (RSGs) AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr based on VLTI/AMBER observations. Methods. We carried out spectro-interferometric observations of AH Sco, UY Sct, and KW Sgr in the near-infrared K band (1.92–2.47 μm) with the VLTI/AMBER instrument with spatial and spectral resolutions of 3 milliarcsec and 1500, respectively, and compared the data to a new grid of hydrostatic PHOENIX model atmospheres. Results. In… Expand

On the atmospheric structure and fundamental parameters of red supergiants
Abstract We present near-infrared spectro-interferometric studies of red supergiant (RSG) stars using the VLTI/AMBER instrument, which are compared to previously obtained similar observations of AGBExpand
VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometry of the late-type supergiants V766 Cen (=HR 5171 A), σ Oph, BM Sco, and HD 206859
Aims. We add four warmer late-type supergiants to our previous spectro-interferometric studies of red giants and supergiants. Methods. We measure the near-continuum angular diameter, deriveExpand
VLTI/AMBER observations of cold giant stars: atmospheric structures and fundamental parameters
Aims. The main goal of this research is to determine the angular size and the atmospheric structures of cool giant stars (epsilon Oct, beta Peg, NU Pav, psi Peg, and gamma Hya) and to compare themExpand
VLTI-PIONIER imaging of the red supergiant V602 Carinae
Context. Red supergiant stars possess surface features and extended molecular atmospheres. Photospheric convection may be a crucial factor of the levitation of the outer atmospheric layers. However,Expand
Aperture synthesis imaging of the carbon AGB star R Sculptoris - Detection of a complex structure and a dominating spot on the stellar disk
Aims. We present near-infrared interferometry of the carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Sculptoris (R Scl). Methods. We employ medium spectral resolution K-band interferometry obtainedExpand
MOLsphere and pulsations of the Galactic Center’s red supergiant GCIRS 7 from VLTI/GRAVITY
Context. GCIRS 7, the brightest star in the Galactic central parsec, formed 6 ± 2 Myr ago together with dozens of massive stars in a disk orbiting the central black-hole. It has been argued thatExpand
Multi-epoch VLTI-PIONIER imaging of the supergiant V766 Cen
The star V766 Cen (=HR 5171A) was originally classified as a yellow hypergiant but lately found to more likely be a 27-36 Msun red supergiant (RSG). Recent observations indicated a close eclipsingExpand
GCIRS 7, a pulsating M1 supergiant at the Galactic centre - Physical properties and age
Context. The stellar population in the central parsec of the Galaxy is dominated in mass and number by an old (several Gyr) population, but young (6 2 Myr), massive stars dominate the luminosityExpand
Systematic trend of water vapour absorption in red giant atmospheres revealed by high resolution TEXES 12 mu m spectra
Context. The structures of the outer atmospheres of red giants are very complex. Recent interpretations of a range of different observations have led to contradictory views of these regions. It isExpand
Spectral type, temperature and evolutionary stage in cool supergiants
In recent years, temperature scales in cool supergiants (CSGs) have been disputed, and the possibility that spectral types (SpTs) do not depend primarily on temperature has been raised. We exploreExpand

Fundamental properties and atmospheric structure of the red supergiant VY Canis Majoris based on VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometry
Aims. We investigate the atmospheric structure and fundamental properties of the red supergiant VY CMa. Methods. We obtained near-infrared spectro-interferometric observations of VY CMa with spectralExpand
Inhomogeneities in molecular layers of Mira atmospheres
Abstract : Aims. We investigate the structure and shape of the photospheric and molecular layers of the atmospheres of four Mira variables. Methods. We obtained near-infrared K-bandExpand
AMBER observations of the AGB star RS Cap: extended atmosphere and comparison with stellar models
We report on K-band VLTI/AMBER observations at medium spectral resolution ($\sim$1500) of RS Capricorni, an M6/M7III semi-regular AGB star. From the spectrally-dispersed visibilities, we measure theExpand
VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometric imaging of VX Sagittarii's inhomogenous outer atmosphere
Aims. We aim to explore the photosphere of the very cool late-type star VX Sgr and in particular the characterization of molecular layers above the continuum forming photosphere. Methods. We obtainedExpand

Context. Aims. We present spatially resolved high-spectral resolution K-band observations of the red supergiant Betelgeuse (α Ori) using AMBER at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). OurExpand
Infrared Spectra and Visibilities as Probes of the Outer Atmospheres of Red Supergiant Stars
