OBJECTIVE Patients with severe sepsis have high mortality that is improved by timely, often expensive, treatments. Patients without insurance are more likely to delay seeking care; they may also receive less intense care. DESIGN We performed a retrospective analysis of administrative database-Healthcare Costs and Utilization Project's Nationwide Inpatient Sample-to test whether mortality is more likely among uninsured patients hospitalized for severe sepsis.
