AIMS The aim of the study was to examine the association between social background and drunken driving. METHODS A Finnish register on suspected drunken driving was combined with data on social background. There were 81,125 drivers arrested for drunken driving and 86,279 references from 1993 to 2007. RESULTS A low level of education, unemployment, living alone and divorce were strongly associated with drunken driving. In addition, for persons aged 15-24 years, low parental education and…
Mental Disorders Associated with Driving under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs: A Register-Based Study
TLDR
Substance use disorders increased the risk of DUI overall, and childhood- and adolescence-onset disorders were a strong predictor of DUID, and bipolar and depressive disorders predicted DUIAP.
Increased criminal activity among people suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A register-based population-level study.
Driving under the influence (DUI) has been connected in increased criminal activity in previous research. More detailed information is needed from the backgrounds and following activities of DUI
Women judging: Is a young male drunk driver perceived as more negligent than a young female drunk driver?
TLDR
The results of an imaginary scenario study of a representative sample of Finnish female driver’s license holders do not support a hypothesis that there would be a negative bias toward young male drivers in the context of drunk driving behavior.
Prevalence and correlates of self-harm among a sample of repeat DUI offenders
TLDR
An exclusive focus on drinking habits and problems is insufficient to address mental health risk among repeat DUI offenders, who might require specialized services designed to address STB.
Commentary: Why Is the Odds Ratio for Involvement in Serious Road Traffic Accident Among Drunk Drivers in Norway and Finland Higher Than in Other Countries?
TLDR
The calculated odds ratios are not only related to alcohol use or blood alcohol concentration per se but also related to the study design and confounding factors not included in statistical analysis; for example, risk-taking behavior.
Factors Predicting Local Effectiveness of Impaired Driving Laws, British Columbia, Canada.
TLDR
The new laws allowing police to suspend licenses and impound vehicles of drinking drivers based on roadside breath alcohol analysis results were associated with improved road safety across the province but were least effective in more socioeconomically disadvantaged regions.

Low educational performance is associated with drunk driving: a 31-year follow-up of the northern Finland 1966 birth cohort.
TLDR
educational failures seem to be part of the complex causal pathway to drunk driving and even to alcohol-related disorders in Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort members.
Socio-economic determinants of drugged driving--a register-based study.
TLDR
Low education, unemployment, disability pension, being divorced and living alone were the strongest individual predictors of DUID in all substance groups and a disadvantaged social background is a significant predictor of driving while under the influence of drugs for all substance use groups in Finland.
The relationship between parental socio-economic status and episodes of drunkenness among adolescents: findings from a cross-national survey
TLDR
Parental socio-economic status is only of limited importance for episodes of drunkenness in early adolescence, and this very limited role seems to apply for girls more than for boys and for parental occupation more than family affluence.
DRUNKEN DRIVING: A RISK FACTOR FOR PREMATURE DEATH
TLDR
The results show a significant relationship between excess mortality, premature, nonnatural deaths often associated with alcohol problems and previous conviction for drunken driving, which suggests that conviction for drunk driving is a significant marker of an adverse prognosis for survival.
An examination between single-parent family background and drunk driving in adulthood: findings from the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort.
TLDR
It is suggested that growing up in a single-parent family is a potentially powerful predictor of adult alcohol-related problems, i.e., early-onset, late-ONSet, and recidivistic drunk driving.
Adolescent risk factors for excessive alcohol use at age 32 years. A 16-year prospective follow-up study
TLDR
Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that among adolescent males, parental divorce, moderate and high level of depressive symptoms, leisure-time spent daily among friends and moderate and drunkenness-orientated drinking were the strongest predictors of excessive alcohol use in adulthood.
High mortality among people suspected of drunk-driving. An 18-year register-based follow-up.
Increased mortality among previously apprehended drunken and drugged drivers.
Generic and crime type specific correlates of youth crime: a Finnish population-based study
TLDR
Examining the psychosocial correlates of various crime types among adolescent males born in Finland in 1981 finds measures moderating the adverse effects of divorce, alleviating parental adversities and supporting parenthood, and tackling substance abuse seem relevant in social and criminal policy.
