Hyoscine has been used for over fifty years for pre-anasthetic medication and for most of this time amnesia has been claimed as one of its valuable properties. The name hyoscine was first used by Ladenburg in 1880 for an alkaloid isolated from hyoscyamine. This alkaloid was found by Schmidt1 in 1890 to be identical with another he had obtained from Scopolia Japonica and which he called scopolamine.
