Abstract A review of processes for the recovery of metals involving the acid decomposition of silicate ores and slags is presented. Emphasis is placed on how consideration of the modes of dissolution and reactivities of silicates in acid solutions can aid process development. The polymerisation and precipitation behaviour of silica under acidic conditions is briefly described.
