The VIPER elements of trypanosomes constitute a novel group of tyrosine recombinase-enconding retrotransposons.

VIPER was initially characterized as a 2326bp LTR-like retroelement associated to SIRE, a short interspersed repetitive element specific of Trypanosoma cruzi.
