Abstract The newly formed US Department of Energy contains a quasi-independent Energy Information Administration charged with improving and augmenting the US energy data base. Given the importance of reliable data to the formulation of energy policy, this new organization should revise and update the various data collection systems it will inherit. One such effort is a series on coal distribution data, on which this communication focuses.
