Bernheim (1941, 1942) reported that sodium benzoate and sodium salicylate increased the oxygen uptake of tubercle bacilli. Lehman (1946a) reported that the respiration of virulent tubercle bacilli was stimulated by sodium salicylate but that the respiration of avirulent tubercle bacilli was not.
