The dental anatomy of Candelariodon barberenai from the Dino donto saurus Assemblage Zone (Pinheiros-Chiniquá Sequence, Santa Maria Supersequence, late Ladinian–early Carnian) of south Brazil, is redescribed. Candelariodon was originally classified as Eucynodontia incertae sedis and our analysis recovered this taxon deeply nested within Probainognathia, as the sister taxon of Potheriodon plus Prozostrodontia. The lower postcanine dentition of Candelariodon has several apomorphies shared with…

A New Prozostrodontian Cynodont (Eucynodontia, Probainognathia) from the Upper Triassic of Southern Brazil

ABSTRACT Probainognathian cynodonts are well represented in the fossil record from the Middle and Upper Triassic of South America, especially in Brazil and Argentina. In this contribution, we

Osteohistology of Late Triassic prozostrodontian cynodonts from Brazil

TLDR
The small derived, brasilodontid prozostrodontians still exhibit an extended growth period compared to similar-sized extant mammals, but may have grown more slowly to adult size as their osteohistology shows it took more than one year for growth to attenuate.

A new early Late Triassic non-mammaliaform eucynodont from Poland

ABSTRACT Bicuspid, tricuspid and tetracuspid postcanine teeth of a new non-mammaliaform eucynodont, Polonodon woznikiensis gen. et sp. nov. from the mid-late Carnian (early Late Triassic) of Woźniki

New sauropodomorph and cynodont remains from the Late Triassic Sacisaurus site in southern Brazil and its stratigraphic position in the Norian Caturrita Formation

Sacisaurus agudoensis is the only silesaurid known from the Triassic beds of the Santa Maria Supersequence and the correlation of its type locality to the other Triassic deposits of south Brazil has

The postcranial anatomy of Brasilodon quadrangularis and the acquisition of mammaliaform traits among non-mammaliaform cynodonts

TLDR
The postcranium of Brasilodon differs from most non-mammaliaform cynodonts and presents similarities with tritylodontids, early mammaliaforms and extant therians, such as a ventrally oriented scapular glenoid facet and a distinct and ossified greater humeral tubercle.

Diversity Patterns of nonmammalian cynodonts (Synapsida, Therapsida) and the impact of taxonomic practice and research history on diversity estimates

Abstract. Nonmammalian cynodonts represent a speciose and ecologically diverse group with a fossil record stretching from the late Permian until the Cretaceous. Because of their role as major

Eucynodont teeth from the Late Triassic of Krasiejów, Southern Poland

ABSTRACT Recent discoveries of Mammaliamorph teeth in the Keuper of southern Poland have extended the global record of eucynodonts in the Late Triassic and revealed a significant diversity of the

The African cynodont Aleodon (Cynodontia, Probainognathia) in the Triassic of southern Brazil and its biostratigraphic significance

TLDR
The first occurrence of the enigmatic African probainognathian genus Aleodon in the Middle-early Late Triassic of several localities from the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil is reported and a new species of Aleodon is proposed based on the specimens from Brazil.

Two New Cynodonts (Therapsida) from the Middle-Early Late Triassic of Brazil and Comments on South American Probainognathians

TLDR
Two new cynodonts from the early Late Triassic of southern Brazil are described and the phylogenetic hypothesis presented herein indicates the degree to which knowledge on probainognathian cynodronts is incomplete and also the relevance of the South American fossil record for understanding their evolutionary significance.

ON CHALIMINIA MUSTELOIDES (EUCYNODONTIA: TRITHELEDONTIDAE) FROM THE LATE TRIASSIC OF ARGENTINA, AND A PHYLOGENY OF ICTIDOSAURIA

TLDR
A cladistic analysis of ictidosaurians supports its monophyly and indicates that they represent an ancestral condition that facilitated the development of the mammalian skull base constituted by the reduced pterygoids, the basisphenoid, and posteriorly thedevelopment of the presphenoid by the ventral extension of the braincase.

A new carnivorous cynodont from the Ischigualasto Formation (Late Triassic, Argentina), with comments on eucynodont phylogeny

ABSTRACT The nearly complete skull of a recently discovered carnivorous eucynodont, Ecteninion lunensis, gen. et sp. nov., is described. This is the first new genus of carnivorous cynodont reported

A NEW TRAVERSODONTID CYNODONT (THERAPSIDA, EUCYNODONTIA) FROM THE MIDDLE TRIASSIC SANTA MARIA FORMATION OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL, BRAZIL

Abstract:  Remains of a peculiar traversodontid cynodont, Protuberum cabralensis gen. et sp. nov., are described herein. The material was collected from two outcrops representing the Therapsid

A new tritheledontid (Therapsida, Eucynodontia) from the Late Triassic of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and its phylogenetic relationships among carnivorous non-mammalian eucynodonts

TLDR
The presence of two kinds of upper postcanines in different replacement waves in Irajatherium could be a useful feature for inference of possible mechanism of dental differentiation among non-mammalian cynodonts.

Trucidocynodon riograndensis gen. nov. et sp. nov. (Eucynodontia), a new cynodont from the Brazilian Upper Triassic (Santa Maria Formation)

TLDR
An almost complete skeleton of a new carnivorous cynodont from the Upper Triassic of Southern Brazil, Trucidocynodon riograndensis gen. nov., is described and the overall morphology of the astragalocalcaneal complex is similar to that of Diademodon and of the therocephalian Bauria.

The Phylogenetic Relationships of Eucynodontia (Amniota: Synapsida)

  • Jun LiuP. Olsen
  • Biology, Environmental Science
    Journal of Mammalian Evolution
  • 2010
TLDR
A cladistic analysis, based on 145 characters and 31 species, and intergrating most prior works, confirmed the monophyly of Eucynodontia, although the results slightly differ from those of previous analyses with respect to the composition of both Cynognathia and ProbainognathIA.

REDESCRIPTION OF PLATYCRANIELLUS ELEGANS (THERAPSIDA, CYNODONTIA) FROM THE LOWER TRIASSIC OF SOUTH AFRICA, AND THE CLADISTIC RELATIONSHIPS OF EUTHERIODONTS

TLDR
A cladistic analysis of 32 taxa (two gorgonopsians, seven therocephalians and 23 cynodonts) and 96 craniodental characters places P. elegans as sister taxon of Eucynodontia, and indicates paraphyly for Therocephalia, with the whaitsiid Theriognathus identified as sisterTaxon of CynodontIA.
