The mass of the central black hole in the giant elliptical galaxy M84 has previously been measured by two groups using the same observations of emission-line gas with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, giving strongly discrepant results: Bower et al. (1998) found M_BH = (1.5^{+1.1}_{-0.6}) x 10^9 M_sun, while Maciejewski & Binney (2001) estimated M_BH = 4 x 10^8 M_sun. In order to resolve this discrepancy, we have performed new measurements of the gas… Expand
The M87 Black Hole Mass From Gas-Dynamical Models Of Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph Observations
The supermassive black hole of M87 is one of the most massive black holes known and has been the subject of several stellar and gas-dynamical mass measurements; however, the most recent revision toExpand
M94 as a unique testbed for black hole mass estimates and AGN activity at low luminosities
We discuss the peculiar nature of the nucleus of M94 (NGC 4736) in the context of new measurements of the broad Hα emission from HST-STIS observations. We show that this component is unambiguouslyExpand
Supermassive Black Holes and Their Host Galaxies - II. The correlation with near-infrared luminosity revisited
We present an investigation of the scaling relations between supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses, M •, and their host galaxies' K-band bulge (L bul) and total (L tot) luminosities. The wide-fieldExpand
M 94 as a Unique Testbed for Black Hole Mass Estimates and AGNActivity at Low Luminosities
We discuss the peculiar nature of the nucleus of M94 (NGC 4736) in the context of new measurements of the broad Hα emission from HST-STIS observations. We show that this component is unambiguouslyExpand
The Black Hole in the Compact, High-dispersion Galaxy NGC 1271
Located in the Perseus cluster, NGC 1271 is an early-type galaxy with a small effective radius of 2.2 kpc and a large stellar velocity dispersion of 276 km/s for its K-band luminosity of 8.9x10^{10}Expand
Resolving accretion flows in nearby active galactic nuclei with the Event Horizon Telescope
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), now with its first ever image of the photon ring around the supermassive black hole of M87, provides a unique opportunity to probe the physics of supermassiveExpand
Toward Precision Black Hole Masses with ALMA: NGC 1332 as a Case Study in Molecular Disk Dynamics
We present first results from a program of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO(2-1) observations of circumnuclear gas disks in early-type galaxies. The program was designed withExpand
A Stellar Dynamical Mass Measurement of the Black Hole in NGC?3998 from Keck Adaptive Optics Observations
We present a new stellar dynamical mass measurement of the black hole in the nearby, S0 galaxy NGC?3998. By combining laser guide star adaptive optics observations obtained with the OH-SuppressingExpand
Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of Quasars at z~3 and Estimates of Their Supermassive Black Hole Masses
We present the results of new infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars at z~3, selected based on the optical r'-band magnitude and the availability of nearby bright stars for future imagingExpand
REVISITING THE SCALING RELATIONS OF BLACK HOLE MASSES AND HOST GALAXY PROPERTIES
New kinematic data and modeling efforts in the past few years have substantially expanded and revised dynamical measurements of black hole masses (M ?) at the centers of nearby galaxies. Here weExpand

Measuring supermassive black holes with gas kinematics: the active S0 galaxy NGC 3998
We present results from a kinematical study of the gas in the nucleus of the active S0 galaxy NGC 3998 obtained from archival HST/STIS long-slit spectra. We analyzed the emission lines profiles andExpand
The Supermassive Black Hole of M87 and the Kinematics of Its Associated Gaseous Disk
We have carried out the first HST long-slit observations of a gaseous disk around a candidate super-massive black hole. The results of this study on the kinematics of the gaseous disk in M 87 are aExpand
Measuring supermassive black holes with gas kinematics. II. The LINERs IC 989 , NGC 5077 , and NGC 6500
We present results from a kinematical study of the gas in the nucleus of a sample of three LINER galaxies, obtained from archival HST/STIS long-slit spectra. We found that, while for the ellipticalExpand
The supermassive black hole in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252
We present results from HST/STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the gas motions in the nuclear region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252. The observed velocity field is consistent with gas in regularExpand
Evidence for a Supermassive Black Hole in the S0 Galaxy NGC 3245
The S0 galaxy NGC 3245 contains a circumnuclear disk of ionized gas and dust with a radius of 1A (110 pc), making it an ideal target for dynamical studies with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ). WeExpand
