Memories of sex-atypical behavior and interests in childhood usually differ between homosexual and heterosexual people. However, variation within these broad groups has not previously been explored in detail, especially among women. We utilized data from a postal survey of a nationwide sample of Australian adult twins (n = 4,901, age range: 19–52 years). Among men, 15.2% reported homosexual behavior (ever), 11.5% said they had been sexually attracted to the same sex, and 6.4% said they were not…

LISREL 8 analyses showed that self-ascribed masculinity–femininity did not mediate the strong relation between sexual orientation and GD for men or for women.

Fraternal Birth Order and Extreme Right-Handedness as Predictors of Sexual Orientation and Gender Nonconformity in Men

There was evidence for a relationship among handedness, sexual orientation, and CGN, and mediation analysis revealed that handedness was associated with sexual orientation directly and also indirectly through the mediating factor of CGN.

Childhood Gender-Typed Behavior and Adolescent Sexual Orientation: A Longitudinal Population-Based Study

Results suggest that the factors contributing to the link between childhood gender-typed behavior and sexual orientation emerge during early development, and some of those factors are likely to be nonsocial, because nonheterosexual individuals appear to diverge from gender norms regardless of social encouragement to conform to gender roles.

Psychiatric Symptoms and Same-Sex Sexual Attraction and Behavior in Light of Childhood Gender Atypical Behavior and Parental Relationships

The findings suggest that childhood GAB is related to later distress both among hetero- and homosexual individuals and to the elevated level of psychological distress among homosexual individuals.

Depression and Sexual Orientation During Young Adulthood: Diversity Among Sexual Minority Subgroups and the Role of Gender Nonconformity

While young adult gender nonconforming behavior was associated with more concurrent depression regardless of sexual orientation, its negative impact on mental health decreased over time, suggesting the importance of investigating diversity and the influence of young adultGender nonconformity in future research on the mental health of sexual minorities.

Correlates of Same-Sex Attractions and Behaviors Among Self-Identified Heterosexual University Students

Self-identified heterosexual students at a large public midwestern university completed measures of sexuality and gender, attitudes toward lesbian, gay, and bisexual people, religious and political beliefs, emotional well-being, and demographics and reported more positive attitudes toward lesbians and gay and bisexual men than did H participants.

Effects of Gender Group Norms on the Endorsement of Same-Sex Attraction, Behavior, and Identity

Previous studies have often revealed differences between the acknowledgment of same-sex attraction and rates of bisexual or homosexual identification. This study contends that social influences

Fraternal Birth Order and Ratio of Heterosexual/Homosexual Feelings in Women and Men

The lack of relationship between the strength of the effect and degree of homosexual feelings in the men and women suggests the influence of birth order on homosexual feelings was not due to a biological, but a social process in the subjects studied.

Opposite sex-linked behaviors and homosexual feelings in the predominantly heterosexual male majority

The finding that the majority of men with homosexual feelings are predominantly heterosexual renders implausible the theory that homosexual feelings result from fear of heterosexuality.

Measuring physical aggressiveness in heterosexual, homosexual, and transsexual males

The main results suggest that whatever underlying factor relates homosexuality to feminine gender identity in childhood relates this erotic preference to anomalously low levels of physical aggressiveness in childhood as well.

Heterosexuality/homosexuality: Dichotomy or continuum

If subjects representative of other subgroups of the population are investigated with this easily implemented method and report similar data, this theoretically and sociologically significant divergence of belief concerning the incidence of the heterosexual/homosexual balance would be resolved.

Opposite Sex Behaviours Correlate with Degree of Homosexual Feelings in the Predominantly Heterosexual

Evidence of a dimensional relationship between opposite sex-linked behaviours in childhood and degree of homosexual feeling in adulthood renders irrational the classification of such behaviours as a gender identity disorder of childhood when homosexuality in adults is not regarded as a disorder.

Childhood play activities of male and female homosexuals and heterosexuals

Scale and item mean comparisons revealed large significant differences between heterosexual males and females, male homosexuals and heterosexuals, and female homosexuals andheterosexuals.

Heritable factors influence sexual orientation in women.

Heritabilities were significant using a wide range of assumptions about both the base rate of homosexuality in the population and ascertainment bias and self-reported history of childhood gender nonconformity.

Adult sexual orientation in relation to memories of childhood gender conforming and gender nonconforming behaviors

Childhood scripts as recalled by homosexual men were considerably more diverse than those of heterosexual men, which has implications not only for commentaries on the basis for homosexuality but for issues to be addressed in future research.

Homosexuality in men and number of older brothers.

The range of possible theories of the birth order phenomenon is restricted to those that can explain not only why older brothers increase the probability of homosexuality in later-born males but also why older sisters neither enhance this effect nor counteract it.

Demographic and sexual characteristics of nonresponders to sexual experience items in a national survey

Given the heavy reliance on self‐report measures, volunteer bias due to patterns of nonresponse is an important issue in sex research. In the present study, rates of nonresponse to self‐administered
