By collecting optical and infrared photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy, we have identified a large number of low-mass stars and brown dwarf candidates belonging to the young cluster (∼5 Myr) associated with the binary star λ Orionis. The lowest mass object found is an M8.5 with an estimated mass of 0.02 M⊙ (∼0.01 M⊙ for objects without spectroscopic confirmation). For those objects with spectroscopy, the measured strength of the Hα emission line follows a distribution similar to other…

Spitzer: Accretion in Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in the λ Orionis Cluster

We present multiwavelength optical and IR photometry of 170 previously known low-mass stars and brown dwarfs of the 5 Myr Collinder 69 cluster (λ Orionis). The new photometry supports cluster

We present IRAC/MIPS Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the solar-type and the low-mass stellar population of the young (∼5 Myr) λ Orionis cluster. Combining optical and Two Micron All Sky

Low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in NGC 2024 : Constraints on the substellar mass function

We present results from a near-infrared spectroscopic study of candidate brown dwarfs and low-mass stars in the young cluster NGC 2024. Using FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 2.1 m and 4 m telescopes, we have

Brown dwarfs and very low mass stars in the Hyades cluster : a dynamically evolved mass function

Aims. We conducted a search for brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass (VLM) stars in the 625 Myr-old Hyades cluster in order to derive the cluster's mass function across the stellar-substellar

A survey for low-mass spectroscopic binary stars in the young clusters around σ Orionis and λ Orionis

We have obtained multi-epoch, high-resolution spectroscopy of 218 candidate low-mass stars and brown dwarfs (BDs) in the young clusters around a Ori and \ Ori. We find that 196 targets are cluster

NEW ISOLATED PLANETARY-MASS OBJECTS AND THE STELLAR AND SUBSTELLAR MASS FUNCTION OF THE σ ORIONIS CLUSTER

We report on our analysis of the VISTA Orion ZY JHKs photometric data (completeness magnitudes of Z = 22.6 and J = 21.0 mag) focusing on a circular area of 2798.4 arcmin2 around the young σ Orionis

Spectroscopy of Very Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in IC 2391: Lithium Depletion and Hα Emission

We have obtained intermediate-resolution optical spectroscopy of 44 candidate very low mass members of the nearby young open cluster IC 2391. Of these, 26 spectra are totally new, 14 had been

XMM-Newton observations of the young open cluster around λ Orionis ,

Aims. We studied the X-ray properties of the young (∼1−8 Myr) open cluster around the hot (O8 III) star λ Ori and compared them with those of the similarly-aged σ Ori cluster to investigate possible

FLAMES spectroscopy of low-mass stars in the young clusters σ Ori and λ Ori ,

Aims. We performed a detailed membership selection and studied the accretion properties of low-mass stars in the two apparently very similar young (1–10 Myr) clusters σ Ori and λ Ori. Methods. We

THE SUBSTELLAR POPULATION OF σ ORIONIS: A DEEP WIDE SURVEY

We present a deep I, Z photometric survey covering a total area of 1.12 deg2 of the σ Orionis cluster and reaching completeness magnitudes of I = 22 and Z = 21.5 mag. From I, I − Z color–magnitude
