Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography, one of the most comprehensive biographical dictionaries for the New World ever published, was discovered in 1909 to contain articles which are complete fabrications, treating of persons who never existed. 84 such forgeries have been discovered by previous writers. Four more are identified here, and the question of their authorship considered.
