The successful use of the vitamin D metabolites 1-alphahydroxy and 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D in the correction of calcium malabsorption in postmenopausal osteoporosis and the equally successful use of vitamin D itself in the prevention of bone loss and fractures in older women have tended to confuse these two treatment modalities in some sections of the scientific community.
