Abstract: In 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, which mandated courses on Black and Minority studies into the curriculum on a nationwide basis. Failure to do so would cause the loss of federal funding. At the time, I was an undergraduate student, one of only four Blacks in the department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Brooklyn College.
