The SkyServer provides Internet access to the public Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data for both astronomers and for science education. This paper describes the SkyServer goals and architecture. It also describes our experience operating the SkyServer on the Internet. The SDSS data is public and well-documented so it makes a good test platform for research on database algorithms and performance.

Data Mining the SDSS SkyServer Database

This paper built a database and interfaces to support both the query load and also a website for ad-hoc access, and reports on the query implementation and performance.

Mining the SDSS SkyServer SQL queries log

Some approaches to SQL query mining are reviewed, traditional techniques used in the literature are applied and lessons learned are presented, namely, that the general text mining approach for feature extraction and clustering does not seem to be adequate for this type of data and, most importantly, it is found that thistype of analysis can result in very different queries being clustered together.

SkyDOT (Sky Database for Objects in the Time Domain): a virtual observatory for variability studies at LANL

This report on the development of SkyDOT (Sky Database for Objects in the Time domain), a new Virtual Observatory, which is dedicated to the study of sky variability, discusses the architecture of the database and the functionality of the user interface.

This work used data from the VISTA and DES programmes to construct a grid-based SDSS distributed model using open grid services architecture - data access and integration (OGSA-DAI and open grid Services architecture - distributed query processing (OGsa-DQP), and designed and ran a set of distributed queries against this model.

SDSS Dataset and SkyServer Workloads 1 Overview

From what I see in Figure 1, of the 1.3 million files in DR4, only 350K some files have any objects in them. What is also interesting is that the objects are not uniformly distributed over the data

Network Measurement Virtual Observatory: An Integrated Database Environment for Internet Research and Experimentation

The nmVO is developed, which helps handling distinct data sources together in a common way efficiently and supports data collecting systems with a permanent data storage, such as SONoMA, and provides a public front-end to run measurements and access data, called GrayWulf.

This work addresses some practical aspects of distributing a large scientific database - the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database and the architecture of the grid-based distributed database system is presented.

The Footprint Database and Web Services of the Herschel Space Observatory

The Herschel Footprint Database and Web Services for the Herschel Space Observatory is built to provide efficient search capabilities for typical astronomical queries and represents sky coverage in an exact geometric form allowing for precise area calculations.
