The role of external carbonic anhydrase in inorganic carbon acquisition and photosynthesis by Chlamydomonas reinhardii at alkaline pH (8.0) was studied. Acetazolamide (50 micromolar) completely inhibited external carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity as determined from isotopic disequilibrium experiments.
