Parallax data from the Hipparcos mission allow the direct distance to open clusters to be compared with the distance inferred from main-sequence (MS) fitting. There are surprising differences between the two distance measurements, indicating either the need for changes in the cluster compositions or reddening, underlying problems with the technique of MS fitting, or systematic errors in the Hipparcos parallaxes at the 1 mas level. We examine the different possibilities, focusing on MS fitting… Expand
The open cluster distance scale - A new empirical approach
We present new BV(RI)C photometry for a sample of 54 local G and K stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes in the metallicity range 0:4 (Fe=H) +0:3. We use this sample to develop a completelyExpand
A Hipparcos study of the Hyades open cluster. Improved colour-absolute magnitude and Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams
Hipparcos parallaxes x distances to individual stars in the Hyades cluster with an accuracy of 6p er- cent. We use the Hipparcos proper motions, which have a larger relative precision than theExpand
The distances to open clusters from main-sequence fitting. III. Improved accuracy with empirically calibrated isochrones
We continue our series of papers on open cluster distances with a critical assessment of the accuracy of main-sequence fitting using isochrones that employ empirical corrections to theExpand
The Problem of HIPPARCOS Distances to Open Clusters. II. Constraints from Nearby Field Stars
This paper examines the discrepancy between distances to nearby open clusters as determined by parallaxes from Hipparcos compared to traditional main-sequence fitting. The biggest difference is seenExpand
The distance to the Pleiades: Main sequence fitting in the near infrared
Hipparcos parallax measurements of stars in the Pleiades notoriously result in a cluster distance of 118 pc, which is approximately 10% shorter than the "classical" result obtained from earlier mainExpand
Spectroscopic Survey of G and K Dwarfs in the Hipparcos Catalog. I. Comparison between the Hipparcos and Photometric Parallaxes
The tension between the Hipparcos parallax of the Pleiades and other independent distance estimates continues even after the new reduction of the Hipparcos astrometric data and the development of aExpand
The Structure and the Distance of Collinder 121 from Hipparcos and Photometry: Resolving the Discrepancy
We present further arguments that the Hipparcos parallaxes for some of the clusters and associations represented in the Hipparcos catalog should be used with caution in the study of the GalacticExpand
Parallaxes and proper motions for 20 open clusters as based on the new Hipparcos catalogue
Context. A new reduction of the astrometric data as produced by the Hipparcos mission has been published, claiming that the accuracies for nearly all stars brighter than magnitude Hp = 8 areExpand
CORRELATED ERRORS IN HIPPARCOS PARALLAXES TOWARD THE PLEIADES AND THE HYADES
We show that the errors in the Hipparcos parallaxes toward the Pleiades and the Hyades open clusters are spatially correlated over angular scales of 2°-3°, with an amplitude of up to 2 mas. ThisExpand
Wiyn open cluster study. xix. main sequence fitting distances to open clusters using v-k color-magnitude diagrams
We have combined existing optical magnitudes for stars in seven open clusters and 54 field stars with the corresponding JHKs photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). Combining opticalExpand

Younger and Brighter - New Distances to Globular Clusters Based on HIPPARCOS Parallax Measurements of Local Subdwarfs
We have used new parallax measurements, obtained by the Hipparcos satellite, of fifteen nearby, metal-poor stars to re-define the subdwarf main-sequence. All of these stars have parallaxes determinedExpand

Ages of globular clusters from hipparcos parallaxes of local subdwarfs
We report here initial but strongly conclusive results for absolute ages of Galactic globular clusters (GGCs). This study is based on high-precision trigonometric parallaxes from the HIPPARCOSExpand
The Age of Globular Clusters in Light of Hipparcos: Resolving the Age Problem?
We review five independent techniques that are used to set the distance scale to globular clusters, including subdwarf main-sequence fitting utilizing the recent Hipparcos parallax catalog. TheseExpand
ANALYSES OF ARCHIVAL DATA FOR COOL DWARFS. IV. [FE/H] AND RELATED PROPERTIES FOR THE HYADES AND COMA
For Hyades and Coma dwarfs, [Fe/H] is found to be 0.107 ± 0.020 dex, respectively. At the 0.047-dex level, there is no sign of an [Fe/H] offset across the Hyades Li chasm. At the 0.064-dex level,Expand
Evolution of low-mass stars in the alpha Persei cluster.
