GPS and low cost inertial sensors it will soon be practical to routinely locate a vehicle to within a lane on a road. For additional cost, positions of decimeter accuracy will be available. Uncoordinated probe vehicles with positioning capabilities and communications can be used to map the lane network with decimeter accuracy.
