The Gobioninae are a group of morphologically and ecologically diverse Eurasian freshwater cyprinid fishes. The intergeneric relationships of this group are unresolved and the possible monophyly of this subfamily remains to be established. We used complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences from most genera within the gobionine group, in addition to a selection of cyprinid outgroups, to investigate the possible monophyly of this group and resolve the interrelationships within the group…

The estimated divergence times between the three Gobio groups coincide with the late Miocene period in which the tectonic uplift of Anatolia and global climate fluctuations occurred and the relatively low genetic distance between Gobio species in the Turkish Lake District indicate that they are not good species.

The findings indicate that Paraleucogobio is a junior synonym of Gnathopogon, and the two mitochondrial genomes showed similar gene arrangements, codon use, gene overlaps or gene intervals with the length of 16,596 BP and 16,598 bp.
Estimated evolutionary tempo of East Asian gobionid fishes (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from mitochondrial DNA sequence data
- Biology
- 2010
A rather complete molecular phylogeny of the East Asian gobionid fishes was constructed based on mtDNA cytochrome b gene sequences, and Peaks of speciation were identified and found approximately to be coincident with East Asian geological events, such as uplifts of the Tibetan plateau and formation of the monsoon system.

The origin of the limnetic forms and the population divergence of the Japanese Gnathopogon species, using molecular phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses, revealed three major lineages in G. elongatus, which was inferred to originate in the present Lake Biwa in the late Pleistocene.
Morphological characteristics and variation of gudgeon, Gobio gobio (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae), from the Odra River drainage, Poland
- Biology, Environmental Science
- 2008
The gudgeon, G. gobio, is a small fish of low economic importance, and therefore has hitherto received little attention, and for a long time gudgeons were thought to belong to a frequently found, polymorphic species Gobio gobio.
