Data acquired by the Galileo magnetometer on five passes by Ganymede have been used to characterize Ganymede's internal magnetic moments. Three of the five passes were useful for determination of the internal moments through quadrupole order. Models representing the internal field as the sum of dipole and quadrupole terms or as the sum of a permanent dipole field upon which is superimposed an induced magnetic dipole driven by the time varying component of the externally imposed magnetic field…

Limits on an intrinsic dipole moment in Europa

[1] Galileo magnetometer data acquired on four passes by Europa have been used to investigate whether a fixed permanent dipole moment is present in the interior of the moon in addition to the induced

Updated Spherical Harmonic Magnetic Field Moments of Ganymede From the Juno Flyby

In this study, we use data from the Juno and Galileo spacecraft to analyze the internal magnetic dynamo of Ganymede. As the only known moon with a strong internal magnetic field, Ganymede is a

Three‐dimensional MHD simulations of Ganymede’s magnetosphere

[1] Ganymede is unique among planetary moons because it has its own magnetic field strong enough to form a magnetosphere within Jupiter’s magnetospheric environment. Here we report on our

Magnetic Field Conditions Upstream of Ganymede

Jupiter's magnetic field is tilted by ∼10° with respect to the planet's spin axis, and as a result the Jovian plasma sheet passes over the Galilean satellites at the jovigraphic equator twice per

Properties of Ganymede's magnetosphere inferred from improved three-dimensional MHD simulations

[1] We describe a three-dimensional single-fluid MHD simulation of Ganymede's magnetosphere that accords extremely well with the Galileo particles and fields measurements. Major improvements to our

Embedded Kinetic Simulation of Ganymede's Magnetosphere: Improvements and Inferences

The largest moon in the solar system, Ganymede, is also the only moon known to possess a strong intrinsic magnetic field and a corresponding magnetosphere. Using the new version of Hall

Variability in the Energetic Electron Bombardment of Ganymede

This study examines the bombardment of energetic magnetospheric electrons onto Ganymede as a function of Jovian magnetic latitude. We use the output from a three‐dimensional, hybrid model to

The production of Ganymede's magnetic field

Juno Magnetometer Observations at Ganymede: Comparisons With a Global Hybrid Simulation and Indications of Magnetopause Reconnection

Juno's flyby of Ganymede on 7 June 2021, provides a unique opportunity to explore the moon's magnetosphere. By means of Magnetometer (MAG) observations and a hybrid numerical simulation, we provide a

Ganymede's magnetosphere: Magnetometer overview

Ganymede presents a unique example of an internally magnetized moon whose intrinsic magnetic field excludes the plasma present at its orbit, thereby forming a magnetospheric cavity. We describe some

The magnetic field and magnetosphere of Ganymede

Within Jupiter's magnetosphere, Ganymede's magnetic field creates a mini‐magnetosphere. We show that the magnetic field measured during Galileo‧s second pass by Ganymede, with closest approach at low

The magnetic field and internal structure of Ganymede

BEFORE the recent fly-bys of Ganymede by the Galileo spacecraft, viable models of the internal structure of Jupiter's largest moon ranged from a uniform mixture of rock and ice to a differentiated

The Galileo magnetic field investigation

The Galileo Orbiter carries a complement of fields and particles instruments designed to provide data needed to shed light on the structure and dynamical variations of the Jovian magnetosphere. Many

Energetic particle signatures at Ganymede: Implications for Ganymede's magnetic field

The second encounter of the Galileo satellite with the Galilean moon Ganymede provided energetic particle measurements showing effects due to the presence of that moon. Jovian corotation signatures,

Magnetoconvection dynamos and the magnetic fields of Io and Ganymede

Data from the Galileo orbiter suggest that two of Jupiter’s moons, Io and Ganymede, have intrinsic magnetic fields. The magnetic field of Jupiter alters the nature of the magnetohydrodynamic

Probing Ganymede's Magnetosphere with Field Line Resonances

We report on the spectrum of field line resonances identified in data acquired by the Galileo spacecraft within Ganymede's magnetosphere on a relatively low latitude pass. We infer properties of the

Magnetic fields of the outer planets

It is difficult to imagine a group of planetary dynamos more diverse than those visited by the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft. The magnetic field of Jupiter is large in magnitude and has a dipole

Europa and Callisto: Induced or intrinsic fields in a periodically varying plasma environment

Magnetometer data from four Galileo passes by the Jovian moon Europa and three passes by Callisto are used to interpret the properties of the plasma surrounding these moons and to identify internal
