As part of our current programme to test ACDM predictions for dark matter (DM) haloes using extended kinematical observations of early-type galaxies, we present a dynamical analysis of the bright elliptical galaxy NGC 4374 (M84) based on ∼450 planetary nebulae (PNe) velocities from the PN.Spectrograph, along with extended long-slit stellar kinematics. This is the first such analysis of a galaxy from our survey with a radially constant velocity dispersion profile. We find that the spatial and…
The extended Planetary Nebula Spectrograph (ePN.S) early-type galaxy survey: The kinematic diversity of stellar halos and the relation between halo transition scale and stellar mass
Context. In the hierarchical two-phase formation scenario, the halos of early type galaxies (ETGs) are expected to have different physical properties from the galaxies’ central regions. Aims. The
The SLUGGS Survey: breaking degeneracies between dark matter, anisotropy and the IMF using globular cluster subpopulations in the giant elliptical NGC 5846
We study the mass and anisotropy distribution of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5846 using stars, as well as the red and blue globular cluster (GC) subpopulations. We break degeneracies in the
Physical properties underlying observed kinematics of satellite galaxies
We study the kinematics of satellites around isolated galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic catalog. Using a model of the phase-space density previously measured
Mapping the dark matter halo of early-type galaxy NGC 2974 through orbit-based models with combined stellar and cold gas kinematics
We present an orbit-based method of combining stellar and cold gas kinematics to constrain the dark matter profile of early-type galaxies. We apply this method to early-type galaxy NGC 2974, using
The Fornax Cluster VLT Spectroscopic Survey II - Planetary Nebulae kinematics within 200 kpc of the cluster core
We present the largest and most spatially extended planetary nebulae (PNe) catalogue ever obtained for the Fornax cluster. We measured velocities of 1452 PNe out to 200 kpc in the cluster core using
Globular clusters kinematics and dynamical models of the massive early-type galaxy NGC 1399
We analyze the dynamical models of the massive early-type galaxy NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster. We use the sample of 790 globular clusters as tracers of gravitational potential
MOND and IMF variations in early-type galaxies from ATLAS3D
Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) represents a phenomenological alternative to dark matter (DM) for the missing mass problem in galaxies and clusters of galaxies. We analyse the central regions of a
Elliptical galaxies with rapidly decreasing velocity dispersion profiles: nmagic models and dark halo parameter estimates for NGC 4494
NGC 4494 is one of several intermediate-luminosity elliptical galaxies inferred to have an unusually diffuse dark matter halo. We use the χ 2 -made-to-measure particle code NMAGIC to construct
Semi-empirical catalog of early-type galaxy-halo systems: dark matter density profiles, halo contraction and dark matter annihilation strength
With Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxy data and halo data from up-to-date N-body simulations within the ?CDM framework we construct a semi-empirical catalog (SEC) of early-type galaxy-halo systems by
Signatures of accretion events in the haloes of early-type galaxies from comparing PNe and GCs kinematics
We have compared the halo kinematics traced by globular clusters (GCs) and planetary nebulae (PNe) for two elliptical galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters NGC 1399 and NGC 4649, and for the

The Planetary Nebula Spectrograph elliptical galaxy survey: the dark matter in NGC 4494
We present new Planetary Nebula Spectrograph observations of the ordinary elliptical galaxy NGC 4494, resulting in positions and velocities of 255 planetary nebulae out to seven effective radii (25
Dearth of dark matter or massive dark halo? Mass-shape-anisotropy degeneracies revealed by nmagic dynamical models of the elliptical galaxy NGC 3379
Recent results from the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph (PNS) survey have revealed a rapidly falling velocity dispersion profile in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3379, casting doubts on whether this
Dark matter distribution in the Coma cluster from galaxy kinematics: breaking the mass-anisotropy degeneracy
We study velocity moments of elliptical galaxies in the Coma cluster using Jeans equations. The dark matter distribution in the cluster is modelled by a generalized formula based upon the results of
The shape of the dark matter halo in the early‐type galaxy NGC 2974
We present HI observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 2974, obtained with the Very Large Array. These observations reveal that the previously detected HI disc in this galaxy is in fact a ring. By
NGC 1407 is the central elliptical in a nearby evolved group of galaxies apparently destined to become a galaxy cluster core. We use the kinematics of globular clusters (GCs) to probe the dynamics
GHASP: an Hα kinematic survey of spiral and irregular galaxies – V. Dark matter distribution in 36 nearby spiral galaxies
The results obtained from a study of the mass distribution of 36 spiral galaxies are presented. The galaxies were observed using Fabry-Perot interferometry as part of the GHASP survey. The main aim
Testing adiabatic contraction with SDSS elliptical galaxies
We study the profiles of 75 086 elliptical galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at both large (50-500 kpc/h) and small (~3 kpc/h) scales. Weak lensing observations in the outskirts of
A chandra view of dark matter in early-type galaxies
We present a Chandra study of mass profiles in seven elliptical galaxies, of which three have galaxy-scale and four have group-scale halos, demarcated at 1013 M☉. These represent the best available
Mass profiles and anisotropies of early-type galaxies
We discuss the problem of using stellar kinematics of early-type galaxies to constrain the orbital anisotropies and radial mass profiles of galaxies. We demonstrate that compressing the light
Planetary nebulae as mass tracers of their parent galaxies: Biases in the estimate of the kinematical quantities
Multi-object and multi-fiber spectrographs on 4 and 8 m telescopes make it possible to use extragalactic planetary nebulae (PNe) in the outer halos of early-type galaxies as kinematical tracers,
