The first time, in 1901, the Physics Nobel Prize was awarded to Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, the discoverer of the X-rays. At that time neither the nominees nor the nominators were well-informed about the processes. Equally, it was a challenge for the Nobel Committee and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, to find out “the physicist”, out of many nominated persons, who deserves the award.
