This chapter follows the class politics of ‘populism’ and ‘Marxism’ through the Australian New Left. While the New Left saw itself as refuting populism, in fact it was mainly anti-nationalist. Because the populist tradition has been misunderstood, the New Left re-articulated many of its ideas, including in the form of academic texts. These texts remain some of the key works on ‘class’ in the Australian social sciences.
