During the last decade or more, there has been considerable scholarly interest in the Netherlands-Indonesian conflict between 1945 and 1949. A large amount of Dutch archival material has now been published,' and in 1988 Professor L. de Jong wrote what is perhaps the first comprehensive account on the subject.2 Much of de Jong's book is based on secondary works and represents a synthesis of what has been done by others. Naturally, de Jong was not able to treat every aspect of this complex issue…
