The Multilevel and Multifaceted Character of Computer Self-Efficacy: Toward Clarification of the Construct and an Integrative Framework for Research

Despite the recent empirical interest and advances in research with regard to the construct of computer self-efficacy (CSE), the results obtained to date have, in some cases, been either equivocal or contradictory. We suggest that such results may be attributable to a general lack of attention to the dynamic, multileveled, and multifaceted nature of the computer self-efficacy construct. We offer examples from the extant CSE literature suggesting weaknesses in existing measures of the construct…Â

Refining the scope in computer self-efficacy relationships: an empirical comparison of three instruments in predicting competence and attitudes
- PsychologyECIS
- 2006
Results suggest that instrument choice makes a significant difference in predictability and that the alignment in scope of CSE with outcomes is moderated by task mastery in that domain.
The Evolving Nature of the Computer Self-Efficacy Construct: An Empirical Investigation of Measurement Construction, Validity, Reliability and Stability Over Time
- BusinessJ. Assoc. Inf. Syst.
- 2007
The results suggest that the common practices of instrument validation and reuse of long-standing instruments to measure CSE may not be the most effective approach to the study of the construct.
Assessing the Dimension of Magnitude in Computer Self-efficacy: An Empirical Comparison of Task-Based and Levels of Assistance-Based Methodologies
- Psychology
- 2011
This study examines which methodology provides a stronger relationship with competence and performance, and using a sample of 610, self-efficacy (using both GCSE of Compeau & Higgins, 1995a, and not specific tasks).
A Meta-Analytic Review of More than a Decade of Research on General Computer Self-Efficacy: Research in Progress
- PsychologyAMCIS

This paper presents the results of a meta-analysis of general CSE provided through the foundation of technology adoption research, and shows evidence of moderate associations ofgeneral CSE with several technology adoptionResearch constructs.
Research Report: The Evolving Relationship Between General and Specific Computer Self-Efficacy - An Empirical Assessment
- PsychologyInf. Syst. Res.
- 2000
It is described how two broad types of computer self-efficacy beliefs are constructed across different computing tasks by suggesting that initial general CSE beliefs will strongly predict subsequentspecific CSE Beliefs, and the emergent patterns of the hypothesized relationships are examined.
Using Levels of Difficulty to Judge Computer Ability: An Empirical Comparison of the Structure of Self-Efficacy
- PsychologyECIS
- 2008
It is found that for three outcomes, the CSE measure which did not include magnitude was significantly better, suggesting that perhaps magnitude is not as important as cognitive researchers have conjectured and further clarifies how individuals judge their computing ability.
General and Specific Computer Self-Efficacy: An Empirical Comparison of their Strength in Predicting General and Specific Outcomes
- Psychology
- 2010
Computer self-efficacy is known to operate at multiple levels, from application-specific sub-domains like spreadsheets to a judgment of ability for the entire computing domain (general computer…
Research Report: The Role of Behavioral Modeling in Computer Skills Acquisition: Toward Refinement of the Model
- PsychologyInf. Syst. Res.
- 2000
An empirically derived model of the CSE construct proposed by Marakas, Yi, and Johnson (1998) is offered to highlight potential theoretical, methodological, and measurement issues which may have contributed to or exacerbated the unexpected results obtained in the Compeau and Higgins study.
Have IS Researchers Lost Bandura's Self-Efficacy Concept? A Discussion of the Definition and Measurement of Computer Self-Efficacy
- Education2011 44th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences
- 2011
Though the IS research field seems to be moving in the direction of specific computer self-efficacy, general computerSelfefficacy is quite different and quite important and it is argued that using the same label for these two different constructs invites misunderstanding and even misdirection.
Explicating Computer Self-Efficacy Relationships: Generality and the Overstated Case of Specificity Matching
- PsychologyJ. Organ. End User Comput.
- 2006
Results indicate any self-efficacy judgment (specific or general) significantly relates to both general and domain-specific constructs, and suggest that an individual’s cognitive processing of ability level is multi-faceted.

- PsychologyPsychological review
