Using deep wide-field photometry 3 yr data (Y3) from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), we present a panoramic study of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The data presented here—a small subset of the full survey—uniformly cover a region of 25 deg2 centered on the galaxy to a depth of g ∼ 23.5. We use these data to study the structural properties of Fornax, overall stellar population, and its member stars in different evolutionary phases. We also search for possible signs of tidal disturbance…
Stellar profile independent determination of the dark matter distribution of the Fornax Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy
The local group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (LG dSphs) are among the most promising astrophysical targets for probing the small scale structure of dark matter (DM) subhalos. We describe a method for
Rediscovery of the Sixth Star Cluster in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
Since first noticed by Shapley in 1939, a faint object coincident with the Fornax dwarf spheroidal has long been discussed as a possible sixth globular cluster (GC) system. However, debate has
Spectroscopic Confirmation of the Sixth Globular Cluster in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
The Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy has an anomalous number of globular clusters, five, for its stellar mass. There is a longstanding debate about a potential sixth globular cluster (Fornax 6) that
The bursty star formation history of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy revealed with the HST
We present a new derivation of the star formation history (SFH) of the dSph galaxy Fornax in two central regions, characterized by unprecedented precision and age resolution. It reveals that star
Tidal Destruction in a Low-mass Galaxy Environment: The Discovery of Tidal Tails around DDO 44
We report the discovery of a ≳1° (∼50 kpc) long stellar tidal stream emanating from the dwarf galaxy DDO 44, a likely satellite of Local Volume galaxy NGC 2403 located ∼70 kpc in projection from its
Internal rotation of Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellites with Gaia Early Data Release 3
We present an analysis of the kinematics of 14 satellites of the Milky Way (MW). We use proper motions (PMs) from theGaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and line-of-sight velocities (vlos) available in
Dark matter properties from the Fornax globular cluster timing: dynamical friction and cored profiles
I summarize our recent results to use the orbits of globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy to learn more about dark matter (DM) properties. Our focus is on clarifying
Non-sphericity of ultra-light axion dark matter halos in the Galactic dwarf spheroidal galaxies
Ultralight-axion (ULA) dark matter is one of the possible solutions to resolve small-scale problems, especially the core-cusp problem. This is because ULA dark matter can create a central soliton
The Cusp–Core Problem in Gas-Poor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
This review deals with the inconsistency of inner dark matter density profiles in dwarf galaxies, known as the cusp–core problem. In particular, we aim to focus on gas-poor dwarf galaxies. One of the
Dynamical friction in Bose-Einstein condensed self-interacting dark matter at finite temperatures, and the Fornax dwarf spheroidal
Aims. The aim of the present work is to better understand the gravitational drag forces, also referred to as dynamical friction, acting on massive objects moving through a self-interacting
