The Milky Way Mass Constrained by Its Hot Gaseous Halo

The Milky Way (MW) mass $M_{\rm vir}$ is a fundamental quantity in astronomy. Although it has been measured extensively, it is still uncertain to more than a factor of two due to limited number or spatial coverage of kinematic tracers. Here we use a novel method to constrain $M_{\rm vir}$ based on the properties of the MW corona. We build a hydrostatic corona model with non-thermal pressure support and a physically-motivated density profile, and derive the temperature distribution, which…

Milky Way mass constraints from the Galactic satellite gap
- Physics
- 2014
We use the distribution of maximum circular velocities, Vmax, of satellites in the Milky Way (MW) to constrain the virial mass, M200, of the Galactic halo under an assumed prior of a Λ cold dark…
ON THE HOT GAS CONTENT OF THE MILKY WAY HALO
- Physics
- 2013
The Milky Way appears to be missing baryons, as the observed mass in stars and gas is well below the cosmic mean. One possibility is that a substantial fraction of the Galaxy's baryons are embedded…
The mass distribution and gravitational potential of the Milky Way
- Physics
- 2017
We present mass models of the Milky Way created to fit observational constraints and to be consistent with expectations from theoretical modelling. The method used to create these models is that…
Unveiling the corona of the Milky Way via ram-pressure stripping of dwarf satellites
- Physics
- 2013
The spatial segregation between dwarf spheroidal (dSph) and dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Group has long been regarded as evidence of an interaction with their host galaxies. In this paper,…
The Milky Way’s Circular Velocity Curve to 60 kpc and an Estimate of the Dark Matter Halo Mass from the Kinematics of ~2400 SDSS Blue Horizontal-Branch Stars
- Physics
- 2008
We derive new constraints on the mass of the Milky Way’s dark matter halo, based on 2401 rigorously selected blue horizontal-branch halo stars from SDSS DR6. This sample enables construction of the…
Ram Pressure Stripping of the Large Magellanic Cloud's Disk as a Probe of the Milky Way's Circumgalactic Medium
- Physics
- 2015
Recent observations have constrained the orbit and structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), implying a well-constrained pericentric passage about the Milky Way (MW) ∼50 Myr ago. In this…
THE SPACE MOTION OF LEO I: THE MASS OF THE MILKY WAY'S DARK MATTER HALO
- Physics
- 2013
We combine our Hubble Space Telescope measurement of the proper motion of the Leo I dwarf spheroidal galaxy (presented in a companion paper) with the highest resolution numerical simulations of…
Hydrostatic mass profiles in X-COP galaxy clusters
- PhysicsAstronomy & Astrophysics
- 2019
Aims. We present the reconstruction of hydrostatic mass profiles in 13 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters that have been mapped in their X-ray and Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) signals out to R200 for the…
CONSTRAINING THE MILKY WAY'S HOT GAS HALO WITH O vii AND O viii EMISSION LINES
- Physics
- 2015
The Milky Way hosts a hot (≈2 × 106 K), diffuse, gaseous halo based on detections of z = 0 O vii and O viii absorption lines in quasar spectra and emission lines in blank-sky spectra. Here we improve…
Non-thermal pressure support in X-COP galaxy clusters
- PhysicsAstronomy & Astrophysics
- 2019
Galaxy clusters are the endpoints of structure formation and are continuously growing through the merging and accretion of smaller structures. Numerical simulations predict that a fraction of their…
