Immersive projection-based display environments have been growing steadily in popularity. However, these systems have, for the most part, been confined to laboratories or other special-purpose uses and have had relatively little impact on human-computer interaction or user-to-user communication/collaboration models. Before large-scale deployment and adoption of these technologies can occur, some key technical issues must be resolved. We address these issues in the design of the Metaverse. In…

Rapidly Deployable Multiprojector Immersive Displays
TLDR
The Metaverse system focuses on a multiprojector scalable display framework that supports automatic detection of devices as they are added/removed from the display environment and, using this method, subpixel calibration is possible with little or no user input.
UTAUT in Metaverse: An “Ifland” Case
TLDR
Results indicate that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence of the metaverse platform significantly increased satisfaction, usage intention, purchase intention, and word-of-mouth intention.
Inexpensive Immersive Projection
TLDR
This technique renders an arbitrarily wide field of view using an efficient GPU-based single-pass rendering algorithm and enables immersive projection systems to be used in casual locations, such as a classroom or even in the home.
Epipolar Contrained User Pushbutton Selection in Projected Interfaces
TLDR
This paper presents a hierarchical vision based approach to detect intuitive gesture-based "mouse clicks" in a front-projected virtual interface and demonstrates that camera-based monitoring of user gesture is feasible even under difficult conditions in which the user is illluminated by changing and saturated colors.
PC Clusters for Virtual Reality
TLDR
The different approaches that have been developed to use PC clusters for VR applications are surveyed and the most common software tools that enable to take advantage of the power of clusters are reviewed.
A Practical Guide to Large Tiled Displays
TLDR
This work presents a discussion of the factors to consider in constructing tiled LCD displays and an evaluation of current approaches used to drive them based on the experience constructing displays ranging from 36 Mpixels to 307 M pixels and wishes to capture current practices to inform the design and construction of future displays at current and larger scales.
A self-configurable large-scale virtual manufacturing environment for collaborative designers
TLDR
A metaearth architecture is proposed as the data structure for representing LSVME, which increases reusability of virtual components and supports self-reconfiguration for manufacturing simulation and a heuristic construction method based on graph theory is proposed.
Visualization Trends: Applications in the Operating Room
TLDR
Promising new capabilities in visualization technology are discussed, which are addressed in some visualization applications, but must be carefully assessed in the context of the laparoscopic environment.
Implementation and analysis of scalable display architecture for laparoscopy
TLDR
A low-latency and general-purpose computing platform is inserted between the traditionally tightly-coupled inputs and outputs of a laparoscopic surgical environment and provides flexibility in the fusion and augmentation of multiple input data sources and in the display of the data on a scalable large display.
Camera-based detection and removal of shadows from interactive multiprojector displays
TLDR
This work introduces a technique that detects and corrects shadows in a multiprojector display while it is in use, and transforms regions to the appropriate projector frames, where corresponding pixel values are increased and/or attenuated.

A Scalable Framework for High-Resolution Immersive Displays
We introduce an immersive display framework that is scalable, easily re-configurable, and does not constrain the display surface geometry. The system achieves very-high resolution display through
VR Juggler: a virtual platform for virtual reality application development
TLDR
VR Juggler is described, a virtual platform for the creation and execution of immersive applications, that provides a virtual reality system-independent operating environment and the benefits derived from its approach are described.
Toward a compelling sensation of telepresence: demonstrating a portal to a distant (static) office
TLDR
By assembling the best of available hardware and software technologies in static scene acquisition, modeling algorithms, rendering, tracking and stereo projective display, this work is able to demonstrate a portal to a real office, occupied today by a mannequin, and in the future by a real remote collaborator.
The ImmersaDesk and Infinity Wall projection-based virtual reality displays
TLDR
Two new, CAVE-derived, projection-based VR displays developed at EVL are presented: the ImmersaDesk and the Infinity Wall, a VR version of the PowerWall, which describe the different requirements which led to their design, and compare these systems to other VR devices.
Surround-screen projection-based virtual reality: the design and implementation of the CAVE
TLDR
This paper demonstrates that projection technology applied to virtual-reality goals achieves a system that matches the quality of workstation screens in terms of resolution, color, and flicker-free stereo, and demonstrates that this format helps reduce the effect of common tracking and system latency errors.
Multi-projector displays using camera-based registration
TLDR
Flexible yet practical methods are presented, enabling low-cost mega-pixel display systems with large physical dimensions, higher resolution, or both, and new opportunities to build personal 3D visualization systems in offices, conference rooms, theaters, or even your living room.
Scalable self-calibrating display technology for seamless large-scale displays
We present techniques for combining high-performance computing with feedback to enable the correction of imperfections in the alignment, optical system, and fabrication of very high-resolution
The office of the future: a unified approach to image-based modeling and spatially immersive displays
TLDR
The apparatus comprises a closed container having a plurality of compartments for containing mustard and catsup, and a valve arrangement is associated with the container to uncover selected openings in compartments, and air under slight pressure is introduced into the Container to assist in ejecting the mustard or catsup.
QuickTime VR: an image-based approach to virtual environment navigation
TLDR
This paper presents a new approach which uses 360-degree cylindrical panoramic images to compose a virtual environment which includes viewing of an object from different directions and hit-testing through orientation-independent hot spots.
