Using a combination of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, we confirmed the presence of a significant velocity gradient along the northeast-southwest direction in the intracluster gas of the cluster Abell 576. The results are consistent with a previous ASCA SIS analysis of this cluster. The error-weighted average over the ACIS-S3 and EPIC MOS1 and MOS2 spectrometers for the maximum velocity difference is >3.3 × 103 km s-1 at the 90% confidence level, similar to the velocity limits estimated…

Nonthermal phenomena in the center of Abell 1775

Context. Thermal gas in the center of galaxy clusters can show substantial motions that generate surface-brightness and temperature discontinuities known as cold fronts. The motions may be triggered

Search for gas bulk motions in eight nearby clusters of galaxies with Suzaku

To search for bulk motions of the intracluster medium, we analyzed the X-ray spectra taken with the Suzaku satellite and measured the Doppler shift of Fe-K line emission from eight nearby clusters of

Searching for Bulk Motions in the Intracluster Medium of Massive, Merging Clusters With Chandra ccd Data

We search for bulk motions in the intracluster medium (ICM) of massive clusters showing evidence of an ongoing or recent major merger with spatially resolved spectroscopy in Chandra CCD data. We

Creation of cosmic structure in the complex galaxy cluster merger Abell 2744

We present a detailed strong lensing, weak lensing and X-ray analysis of Abell 2744 (z = 0:308), one of the most actively merging galaxy clusters known. It appears to have unleashed ‘dark’, ‘ghost’,

Mass and gas profiles in A1689: joint X-ray and lensing analysis

We carry out a comprehensive joint analysis of high-quality HST/ACS and Chandra measurements of A1689, from which we derive mass, temperature, X-ray emission and abundance profiles. The X-ray

Constraining Gas Motions in the Intra-Cluster Medium

The detailed velocity structure of the diffuse X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium (ICM) remains one of the last missing key ingredients in understanding the microphysical properties of these hot

Constraining Gas Motions in the Intra-Cluster Medium

Simulating the Bullet Cluster

We present high resolution N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the interacting cluster 1E0657-56. The main and the subcluster are modelled using extended cuspy Acold dark

Atmospheric gas dynamics in the Perseus cluster observed with Hitomi

Extending the earlier measurements reported in Hitomi collaboration (2016, Nature, 535, 117), we examine the atmospheric gas motions within the central 100 kpc of the Perseus cluster using

Chandra measurements of non-thermal-like X-ray emission from massive, merging, radio halo clusters

We report the discovery of spatially extended, non-thermal-like emission components in Chandra X-ray spectra for five of a sample of seven massive, merging galaxy clusters with powerful radio haloes.

Detection of Bulk Motions in the Intracluster Medium of the Centaurus Cluster

Several recent numerical simulations of off-center cluster mergers predict that significant angular momentum with associated velocities of a few ×103 km s-1 can be imparted to the resulting cluster.

Velocity Gradients in the Intracluster Gas of the Perseus Cluster

We report the results of spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy of eight different ASCA pointings distributed symmetrically around the center of the Perseus Cluster. The outer region of the

Suzaku Observations of the Centaurus Cluster: Absence of Bulk Motions in the Intracluster Medium

The Centaurus cluster (z=0.0104) was observed with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) onboard the Suzaku X-ray satellite in three pointings, one centered on the cluster core and the other two

Direct Measurements of Gas Bulk Flows in the Intracluster Medium of the Centaurus Cluster with the Chandra Satellite

We present the analysis of the velocity structure of the intracluster gas near the core of Abell 3526 obtained with two off-center Chandra observations, specifically designed to eliminate errors due

The Infall Region of Abell 576: Independent Mass and Light Profiles

We describe observations of the nearby (cz = 11,487 km s-1) cluster of galaxies Abell 576 beyond the virial radius and into the infall region where galaxies are on their first or second pass through

Constraints on Intracluster Gas Bulk Motions in Clusters of Galaxies with ASCA

The recent detection of Doppler shifts of X-ray spectral lines in the intracluster gas of the Centaurus and Perseus clusters of galaxies with ASCA has raised the question of the frequency of such

Prospects for Detection of Intracluster Gas Bulk Velocities through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect

Intracluster gas velocity gradients have been recently detected by the authors in the Centaurus Cluster (A3526) using the Doppler shift of X-ray spectral lines with ASCA Solid-State Imaging

Metallicity Gradients in the Intracluster Gas of Abell 496

Analysis of spatially resolved ASCA spectra of the intracluster gas in Abell 496 confirms there are mild metal abundance enhancements near the center, as previously found in a joint analysis of

Complex Structure of Galaxy Cluster A1689: Evidence for a Merger from X-Ray Data?

A1689 is a galaxy cluster at z = 0.183 for which previous measurements of its mass by using various techniques gave discrepant results. We present a new detailed measurement of the mass with the data
