This article responds to Ian McKay’s invitation to Canadian historians to participate in the creation of a new paradigm of Canadian history with a ‘reconnaissance of liberalism’ (CHR Forum, Dec. 2000). It argues that the reconnaissance, which McKay believes will problematize fundamental liberal assumptions about the individual and his or her relationship to liberty, equality, justice, and the state, has already informed the work of historians of the family in Canada.
