We show that the large-N limits of certainconformal field theories in various dimensions includein their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds. This is shown bytaking some branes in the full M/string theory and thentaking a low-energy limit where the field theory on thebrane decouples from the bulk. We observe that, in this limit, we can still trust thenear-horizon geometry for large N. The… Expand
Black Holes , Branes and Superconformal Symmetry 1
The main focus of this lecture is on extended objects in adSp+2×Sd−p−2 bosonic backgrounds with unbroken supersymmetry. The backgrounds are argued to be exact, special consideration are given to theExpand
Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories and Their String Theory Duals
In this thesis, we consider two aspects of the conjectured gauge theory/string theory correspondence between three-dimensional maximal supersymmetric conformal field theories, which describe theExpand
Superconformal symmetry, supergravity and cosmology
We introduce the general N = 1 gauge theory superconformally coupled to supergravity. The theory has local SU(2,2|1) symmetry and no dimensional parameters. The superconformal origin of theExpand
Aspects of Compactifications and Black Holes in Four-Dimensional Supergravity
In the 20th century, theoretical physics has seen the development of General Relativity and the Standard Model of elementary particles. These theories describe, with great precision, gravity and allExpand
Holography and the Higgs branch of N=2 SYM theories
We present a proposal for the description of the Higgs branch of four-dimensional N=2 super- symmetric Yang-Mills theories in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We focus on a finite Sp(N) N=2Expand
Quantum aspects of gauge theories , supersymmetry and unification
This is an introductory review of the AdS/CFT correspondence and of the ideas that led to its formulation. We show how comparison of stacks of D3-branes with corresponding supergravity solutionsExpand
Towards integrability for AdS3/CFT2
In this thesis we consider certain supersymmetric string theories on curved backgrounds containing the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space, AdS3. On the one hand, these are gravity theories inExpand
Exact Results in Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theory
This thesis is devoted to a number of exact computations in various supersymmetric quantum field theories and their applications in studying nonperturbative properties of the theories. In the firstExpand

A class of six-dimensional conformal field theories
We describe a class of six-dimensional conformal field theories that have some properties in common with and possibly are related to a subsector of the tensionless string theories. The latterExpand

Entropy of near-extremal black p-branes
We carry out a thorough survey of entropy for a large class of p-branes in various dimensions. We find that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy may be given a simple world volume interpretation only forExpand
Gauge invariant and gauge fixed D-brane actions

Instantons, scale invariance and Lorentz invariance in matrix theory
Abstract In this paper we consider features of graviton scattering in Matrix theory compactified on a 2-torus. The features which interest us can only be determined by nonperturbative effects in theExpand
Universal low-energy dynamics for rotating black holes
Fundamental string theory has been used to show that low-energy excitations of certain black holes are described by a two-dimensional conformal field theory. This picture has been found to beExpand
Conformally invariant supersymmetric field theories on Sp × S1 and super p-branes
Abstract We construct supersymmetric field theories on Sp × S1 for p = 1,…,5. These spaces are the boundaries of the anti-de Sitter space in (p + 2)-dimensions. Thesetheories are invariant under theExpand
Antigravitating Black Hole Solitons with Scalar Hair in N=4 Supergravity
