The LHC Reference Magnetic System

Abstract

This paper introduces the aims and the preliminary design of the Reference Magnetic System (RMS) for the LHC that will track and provide information on the magnetic state of the machine during operation. The necessity of the RMS will be justified towards the requirements for the LHC operation. The RMS should have three major actors: the database of the series measurements, the magnets field model established and tested during series measurements and the online reference magnets equipped with suitable magnetic measurement systems. The relevant quantities expected to be delivered by the RMS to the machine control system are the integral main field strength of the dipole and quadrupole magnets for each machine sector, as well as their higher order harmonics.
