We use an isometric embedding of the cross-over surface of the outer horizon of a rapidly rotating Kerr black hole in a hyperbolic space to compute the quasi-local mass of the horizon for any allowed value of the spin parameter j = J/m 2. The mass is monotonically decreasing from twice the ADM mass at j = 0 to 1.765 69m at j=3/2 . It then monotonically increases to a maximum around j = 0.999 07, and finally decreases to 2.019 66m for j = 1 which corresponds to the extreme Kerr black hole.

Global embedding of the Kerr black hole event horizon into hyperbolic 3-space
An explicit global and unique isometric embedding into hyperbolic 3-space, H{sup 3}, of an axi-symmetric 2-surface with Gaussian curvature bounded below is given. In particular, this allows theExpand

The Kerr rotating black hole metric has unstable photon orbits that orbit around the hole at fixed values of the Boyer-Lindquist coordinate r that depend on the axial angular momentum of the orbit,Expand
A generalization of Liu-Yau's quasi-local mass
In [LY, LY2], Liu and the second author propose a definition of the quasi-local mass and prove its positivity. This is demonstrated through an inequality which in turn can be interpreted as a totalExpand
Isometric Embeddings into the Minkowski Space and New Quasi-Local Mass
The definition of quasi-local mass for a bounded space-like region Ω in space-time is essential in several major unsettled problems in general relativity. The quasi-local mass is expected to be aExpand

Wang and Yau's Quasi-Local Energy for an Extreme Kerr Spacetime
There exist constant radial surfaces, $\mathcal{S}$, that may not be globally embeddable in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for Kerr spacetimes with $a>\sqrt{3}M/2$. To compute the Brown and York (B-Y) quasi-localExpand
Positivity of quasilocal mass.
It is shown that the quasilocal energy of the boundary of a compact spacelike hypersurface which satisfies the local energy condition is strictly positive unless the spacetime is flat along the spacelikes hypersurfaces. Expand
