  • THE potato, known to botanists as Solanttm tuberosum esculentum, was native to the west coast of South America. How and when it was introduced into Europe is uncertain; but by I588 the new plant was grown in Italy, as we know from records left by a famous botanist, Carolus Clusius.' The first published description which shows that its author had seen potatoes in Europe is contained in John Gerard's Herball, or general historic of plantes (London, I597).
