Recent observations from the QuikSCAT and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellites, as well as a longer record of Special Sensor Microwave Imager winds are used to investigate the existence and dynamics of a Southern Hemisphere partner to the intertropical convergence zone in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. The southern intertropical convergence zone extends eastward from the coast of Brazil in the latitude band 10 8‐38S and is associated with seasonal precipitation exceeding 6 cm month 21…

Tropical Atlantic Variability: Patterns, Mechanisms, and Impacts

This chapter reviews the progress made in the past decade in understanding tropical Atlantic climate variability. In addition to an equatorially anti-symmetric seasonal cycle forced directly by the

SST Indexes in the Tropical South Atlantic for Forecasting Rainy Seasons in Northeast Brazil

May-to-July and February-to-April represent peak rainy seasons in two sub-regions of Northeast Brazil (NEB): Eastern NEB and Northern NEB respectively. In this paper, we identify key oceanic indexes

Influence of Panamanian Wind Jets on the Southeast Intertropical Convergence Zone

Gridded QuikSCAT data has been used to show that a strong confluence zone of the Southeast Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone (SITCZ) existed in 2000 – 2002 during boreal spring, and the Panama

Seasonal variablity of the heat and mass transport along the western boundary of tropical Atlantic

The Tropical Atlantic comprised between 20oN and 20oS presents today an important key to the knowledge of climatic changes in the world. Two areas are of particular interest: the zonal band of the

Impact of intraseasonal wind bursts on sea surface temperature variability in the far eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean during boreal spring 2005 and 2006: focus on the mid-May 2005 event

Abstract. The impact of boreal spring intraseasonal wind bursts on sea surface temperature variability in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean in 2005 and 2006 is investigated using numerical

Shallow Overturning Circulations of the Tropical‐Subtropical Oceans

The Subtropical Cells (STCs) of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans connect the subtropical subduction regions of both hemispheres to the eastern, equatorial upwelling regimes by equatorward thermocline

The seasonal cycle in the lower troposphere over West Africa from sounding observations

In situ sounding observations from selected sites in West and Central Africa were used to document the seasonal cycle in the lower troposphere associated with the annual migration of precipitation.

Seawater temperature changes associated with the North Brazil current dynamics

This study used hydrographic data (CTD and ADCP) collected along the north Brazilian continental shelf and the adjacent oceanic area (the north Brazilian zone) and 13 years of monthly data of sea

Variability of Tropical Diurnal Sea Surface Temperature

Abstract A dataset consisting of daily diurnal warming values from 1996 through 2000 covering the global Tropics (30°N through 30°S) at 0.25° × 0.25° resolution has been created using a

Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies in the Western Indian Ocean as a Trigger for Atlantic Niño Events

Pacific El Niño and Atlantic Niño events represent prominent interannual climate fluctuations in tropical regions. Both of them have considerable impacts on the climate system and human livelihoods.

Tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature variability and its relation to El Niño‐Southern Oscillation

Past analyses of tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature variability have suggested a dipole behavior between the northern and southern tropics, across the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). By

Evolutionary Structure of the Eastern Pacific Double ITCZ Based on Satellite Moisture Profile Retrievals

Abstract For about a month near the boreal vernal equinox, the eastern Pacific intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is observed to form two troughs quasi-symmetrically situated about the equator

Structure of Interannual-to-Decadal Climate Variability in the Tropical Atlantic Sector

Abstract A search for coupled modes of atmosphere–ocean interaction in the tropical Atlantic sector is presented. Previous studies have provided conflicting indications of the existence of coupled

Satellite Observations of the Southeast Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone

An intertropical convergence zone in the southeast Pacific Ocean is described from monthly mean 1° × 1° ocean vector wind, rainfall, sea surface temperature, and integrated water vapor measurements

Seasonal and interannual variability of atmospheric convergence zones in the tropical Pacific observed with ERS‐1 scatterometer

Monthly images of atmospheric convergence zones in the tropical Pacific were produced with 1992–1994 ERS‐1 scatterometer wind vectors. From the images, the position, width, and intensity of the

Surface conditions associated with anomalous rainfall in the guinea coastal region

This paper examines surface atmospheric and oceanic conditions associated with anomalous rainfall at the Guinea coast. For time-scales shorter than 5 years, rainfall in the Guinea coast is

Relative Roles of Elevated Heating and Surface Temperature Gradients in Driving Anomalous Surface Winds over Tropical Oceans

Abstract Elevated heating by cumulus convection and sea surface temperature gradients are both thought to contribute to surface winds over tropical oceans. The relative strength and role of each

Observations of Planetary Boundary-Layer Structure in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific

Abstract Atmospheric soundings were collected from a research ship in the eastern equatorial Pacific to determine the kinematic and thermodynamic structure of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) in

Annual cycle of sea surface temperature in the tropical Atlantic Ocean

The strongest temporal variation of sea surface temperature (SST) in the Atlantic occurs at the annual period. In this paper we examine the causes of the annual cycle of SST through a series of
