The purpose of this review is to discuss recent developments occurring at the interface of cosmology with string and M theory. We begin with a short review of 1980s string cosmology and the Brandenberger–Vafa mechanism for explaining space–time dimensionality. It is shown how this scenario has been modified to include the effects of p-brane gases in the early universe. We then introduce the Pre-Big-Bang scenario (PBB), Hořava–Witten heterotic M theory and the work of Lukas, Ovrut and Waldram…

Loitering phase in brane gas cosmology

Brane Gas Cosmology and Loitering

In Brane Gas Cosmology (BGC) the initial state of the universe is taken to be small, dense and hot, with all fundamental degrees of freedom near thermal equilibrium. This starting point is in close

Brane world cosmology

Recent developments in the physics of extra dimensions have opened up new avenues to test such theories. We review cosmological aspects of brane world scenarios such as the Randall–Sundrum brane

Towards a stringy resolution of the cosmological singularity

We study cosmological solutions to the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory including possible leading order $\alpha'$ corrections and a potential for the dilaton. We consider the

Cosmology and brane worlds: a review

Cosmological consequences of the brane world scenario are reviewed in a pedagogical manner. According to the brane world idea, the standard model particles are confined on a hypersurface (a so-called

Topics in stringy cosmology

This thesis is composed of two distinct research topics. The first topic concerns RandallSundrum cosmological models, in particular their isotropization properties at early times. We first study the

Lectures on string/brane cosmology

An overview of some cosmological aspects of string theory is presented. Recent developments are emphasized, especially the attempts to derive inflation or alternatives to inflation from the dynamics

TASI Lectures: Cosmology for String Theorists

These notes provide a brief introduction to modern cosmology, focusing primarily on theoretical issues. Some attention is paid to aspects of potential interest to students of string theory, on both

The accelerating Universe and a limiting curvature proposal

We consider the hypothesis of a limiting minimal curvature in gravity as a way to construct a class of theories exhibiting late-time cosmic acceleration. Guided by the minimal curvature conjecture we

Elements of string cosmology

Cosmology and Heterotic M--Theory in Five-Dimensions

In these lectures, we present cosmological vacuum solutions of Horava-Witten theory and discuss their physical properties. We begin by deriving the five-dimensional effective action of strongly

Imaginative Cosmology

. We review 1 a few off-the-beaten-track ideas in cosmology. They solve a variety of fundamental problems; also they are fun. We start with a description of non-singular dilaton cosmology. In these

Cosmology and Hierarchy in Stabilized Randall-Sundrum Models

We consider the cosmology and hierarchy of scales in models with branes immersed in a five-dimensional curved spacetime subject to radion stabilization. The universe naturally find itself in the

Stringy world branes and exponential hierarchies

It is argued that an assumption that is needed in the RS explanation of the hierarchy is hard to satisfy in the string theory context.

Bulk fields in the Randall-Sundrum compactification scenario

Recently, Randall and Sundrum proposed a solution to the hierarchy problem where the background spacetime is five dimensional. There are two 3-branes, and the mass scale for fields that propagate on

p -brane cosmology and phases of Brans-Dicke theory with matter

We study the effect of the solitonic degrees of freedom in string cosmology following the line of Rama. The gas of solitonic p-brane is treated as a perfect fluid in a Brans-Dicke type theory. In

FROM p-BRANES TO COSMOLOGY

We study the relationship between static p-brane solitons and cosmological solutions of string theory or M theory. We discuss two different ways in which extremal p-branes can be generalized to
