To progress significantly beyond cur ren t reason ma in t enance sys tems, we must formulate their s t r uc tu r e and in tended behavior precisely enough to analyze computa t iona l complexities and tradeoffs independent ly of the cur ren t set of l imited implemen ta t ion proposals . This paper summar izes one such formulat ion, and indicates some unsolved pract ica l p roblems for invest igation in future reason ma in tenance sys tems .
